JACOBS VS. RYDER PLUS UNDERCARD PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:

“This is a huge night of boxing at Alexandra Palace, the first time in nearly ten years we’ve been at that tremendous venue. This Saturday live on DAZN across the world, two-division World Champion Danny Jacobs will fight John Ryder in an official Eliminator for the WBA Super-Middleweight championship of the world – what a tremendous fight card.

“We want to welcome Daniel Jacobs, who is a major name to bring over for British boxing, we’ve worked with Danny for a long time now and it’s not often you see someone with his profile, achievements and ability grace these shores so a tremendous night for British boxing and between Jacobs and Ryder.

“John Ryder summed it up so well where he said, the loser is done, because these two are in pursuit of world championships. This is an official eliminator, and an absolute must win for both guys on Saturday night. So many must win fights for everyone on the card.”

Keith Connolly, manager of Daniel Jacobs:
“When you [Eddie] brought up this fight to us and said it would be in England, we weren’t hesitant at all, we were excited. We jumped at the opportunity and love the fans here, it’s one of the reasons we came over, Danny and I have been talking for about five years about coming over here to fight because of the fans. We love the country, the fans, we’re excited for Saturday night.

“We’re here to prove a point, Danny had a tremendous camp and definitely the best camp he’s had in probably the last 3 or 4 years. A lot of credit is to Danny and his attitude, but I also want to give credit to Andre Rozier head trainer who did a tremendous job this camp. Anthony Irons his assistant trainer, another tremendous job, obviously Scooter he’s the best conditioning coach in the world. Danny is tremendous shape and I expect a huge performance on Saturday, and I think that puts him right back in the mix.”
Charlie Sims, manager of John Ryder:

“Credit to Danny for coming over, obviously John’s coming off the back of that big Smith fight, he was unfortunate not to get the decision that night. As we all know the Super-Middleweight division is now controlled by Canelo and without getting a World Title shot, we wanted to fight the next best fighter in the division and Danny Jacobs for us is that guy.

“It’s a must win, John wants to go on and win World Titles and Danny Jacobs in the man in the way. John knows he’s got to put in a career best performance to win and that’s what he’s planning to do.”

Daniel Jacobs:

“This was an opportunity for me once I got a list of opponents to choose from, to come to England was one of them and I jumped right on it. I remember as an amateur I came over here 17/18 years old, I had such an incredible experience. I fought in Liverpool, fought in London and those memories live with me up until this day.

“I always wanted to create more memories for myself as a professional and so when I got the opportunity, I jumped right on it because I know the energy and the crowd, the people and fans, just the atmosphere is going to be one to remember. I’m looking forward to Saturday night, I may not have everyone in attendance going for me but it’s not nothing I’m not used to. Good or bad energy, it all works for me and motivates me, as long as there’s people cheering enjoying both of us putting our lives on the line then I know I’m doing my job.

“I’m looking forward to an amazing atmosphere, to go from fighting Julio César Chávez Jr in Phoenix with a sold-out crowd to an empty arena where I can hear a pin drop, it’s kind of an awkward situation. Ultimately, it’s up to me to overcome and it wasn’t the best performance, but I look forward to overriding that last performance with this one.

“John Ryder is a motivated fighter, he understands the risks and tasks at hand, I’m looking forward to doing my job as well. I’m back with my team, I just want to take my hats off to all my team members for all the things they do, Andre, Scoot, Mike, Baz, Anthony back at home, all you guys, this has been a tremendous camp and I’ve been back at my happy place. I look forward to showing the world exactly what I’m made of.

“I’m a decorated fighter, one bad performance doesn’t define my career, this whole notion of my career is done if I don’t win, I get that the importance of this fight is to put us back into title contention. My career is far from over, I have a lot more that I want to continue and accomplish, I want to be able to have that hall of fame talk that me and my trainer have always talked about since we laced the first pair of gloves in my first professional fight.

“For me this is more motivation to know that people think this way and it’s so cruel and harsh to fighters with one loss, that’s more motivation for me to go inside that ring and to put it all on the line. I understand the importance of this fight and to put me back into position which I want to create history.”

John Ryder:

“It’s a fight I’ve been craving for a long time, I know your [Eddie] ears have been on fire when the phone’s been ringing and Tony’s been on the case but listen, you’ve delivered. A massive name in the UK and on my doorstep at Ally Pally, it doesn’t get much bigger than this for me.

“At 33 I’m not ready to retire, I want to kick on and have a few more years in this sport and a few more years of big fights – World Title fights – getting what I deserve out of this sport. I’ve been working tirelessly in the gym with the best strength and conditioner in the world Dan Lawrence, Tony and Charlie Sims, been lucky enough to have the likes of Peter Sims and Kevin Mitchell in the gym, just picking their brains and getting their knowledge. It’s a real family affair.

“It feels like a long time coming, COVID messed things up for everyone massively, it’s about putting things right now. It’s been a slow two years but get back in 2022, a good start to the year and really kick on.”

Johnny Fisher:

“I’m very grateful for the help from my Mum and Dad, they’ve been fantastic for me. As you’ve said, no matter how many people go into that arena at the Ally pally on Saturday night, when I get into that ring it’s just me and Gabriel Enguema.

“It’s up to me to do a job, he’s a very experienced opponent that’s been in with some top people. Me and the Tibbs’, Sunny Cannon, have been working on a game plan and I’ve got to implement that. The fans are going to be there and I’m grateful for their support but at the end of the day it’s me and another man in a boxing ring and I’ve got to beat him.

“I’ve been in the ring with some great guys and learning all the time, when I made my pro debut this time last year, I couldn’t have dreamed of being in the position I’m in now. I think that’s testament to the fact I’ve been taking it one fight at a time; I don’t think too far ahead and the only challenge that concerns me at the minute is on Saturday night getting the win.

“I want to do it in good fashion, and we’ve been working on it, I want to show a bit of control, but I know if I need to go down and get dirty, that’s my bread and butter so I’m ready to do that as well.

“I really enjoyed the ring walk last time, I thought I was going to be nervous, but I enjoyed it, not many boxers get to experience this in their whole career so why not soak it all in. Getting in the ring I felt a bit of nerves but that’s natural and makes me perform better, it’s up to me now on Saturday night we’re going to get the job done.

“I could have done 4000 tickets easily for this fight. If you’d have given me 4000 at the start I could’ve easily done that. We’ve got about 2500 in there and they’re all going to be chanting for the Romford Bull so I’m going to be ready to go.”

Gabriel Enguema:

“Thanks very much for the opportunity, it’s great to be part of these big events and particularly facing an opponent who has such a large following. I’m looking forward to playing a big role in this fight, I was actually on a Matchroom show before but was unable to make it so I’m happy to make up for lost time and put on a good show.

“I’m going in to win and that’s all.”

Felix Cash:

“I had a bit of time off, it’s been about ten months, so it’s time to get the ball moving and get myself in a position for a World Title this year. No comparison he’s a decent opponent and he was a good amateur but he’s in with a different level of fighter.

“He’s talking about schooling but he’s going to be taken back to school, I’m going to put on a performance on Saturday night.

“I want to step up my levels, I don’t know if he is a level above, but we’ll have to wait and see on Saturday night. I’m waiting for these big fights, the Eubank Jr’s, the big fights. I’ll get past him first but there’s some big fights out there for me this year, get myself in the right position for a World Title.

“I believe I’m the number one Middleweight in Britain, I believe by the end of the ear everyone else will believe it too.”

Magomed Madiev:

“This is a great opportunity for me, I’ve come here to get a belt and I’m going to put up a great fight.

“I really believe I’ll school him; I’ve got an extensive amateur career and I will be teaching him something in the ring.”

Ellie Scotney:

“This is a fight that I’ve been really able to get my teeth into, there are fights that are going to ask questions of myself and I feel like I’m really ready to deliver the answers.

“I’ve watched a lot of her [Guanini] fights at Super-Fly because I think that was when she was at her best, obviously she’s been given the same notice as me for this fight. I’m prepared for war too.

“It’s a great place for me to be and I’m learning outside of the box, they’ve got a great team there with the boys and girls. I’m buzzing to be part of that mix.”

Jorgelina Guanini:

“First and foremost, thanks for the opportunity, I have to say sorry for the last time. As Eddie said, I accepted this fight at very short notice only five days from the fight, so I’m very happy to be given this opportunity. When I went away last time, I had a bitter taste in my mouth and I’m now in professional mode.

“Last time when I fought, I lost the opportunity to defend my title which I thought was a bit of an injustice, I’m here now to delete what happened and put those injustices to bed.

“Whenever I step into a ring it’s all-out war and I’ll be ready for this, particularly given that there’s a title on the line, God willing I’ll come away with the title. Last time when I fought Rachel Ball it was about surviving those ten rounds because I took the fight at short notice, this time as I said I’m coming for war.”

Austin Williams:

“I’m very excited to be here in London again, first off I want to give a major shoutout to Danny Jacobs. Coming from the United States, guys like him are people that we look up to as the young fighters and next generation. To be able to fight on his undercard, blessed with the opportunity because of the hard work he put in, that’s major for me. I want to be where he’s already been. I’m so happy to be here and bring that energy to London, just like Jacobs is doing.

“I’ve been working, I made a coach change which was very important for my career. I’m doing everything I need to do on my side to be ready for those opportunities when they come. I’m going to take it one fight at a time.

“Smith I was really looking forward to that, he’s better than his record shows, I watched him and was excited for a firefight with him, I wish him a speedy recovery. This guy that I’ve got, Maciel, he’s also a warrior – better than his record. I’m just ready to show that even though he’s okay, he’s good, I’m on a different level and ready for those bigger fights.”

Hopey Price:

“I’m happy to be back out on this show at Ally Pally, even though it’s only a six rounder I’m looking to get some good rounds under my belt. Put on a good performance and then I can push on to that title fight back in Leeds.

“All of my fights are going to be big performances this year, I just can’t wait to really show how good I really am, this year in 2022 is really when people will start taking notice as one of the best prospects this country has

“That was one of the reasons for us to do the ten rounds last time, just to get the rounds under my belt, you can’t buy that experience. If the stoppage comes then I’m not going to let it go the distance, I’m going to try and take him out, if I can get the rounds under my belt it’s all good and well but if I can take him out believe me I will.”

Cyrus Pattinson:

“I was absolutely devastated; I didn’t really expect to experience that early on in my career, but I stayed on over Christmas and it was a bitter pill to swallow – after the investment in my camp. I’m just excited, everything happens for a reason, when I look at the positives it means I can start up this year and build up the momentum, follow through and have a really busy year.

“I want a really busy year, last year I could have had three fights in six months but this year I want to push for maybe six and I want a title. I think we’re going to look for an international title at the end of the year. I want to move fast, I think I am ready for eight rounds after this fight, push into tens and get the titles.”

Shiloh Defreitas:

“I’m a 2-0 pro and I want to make it 3-0, I’m looking to have a busy year this year, looking to push for eight fights. We’re going to get Saturday out of the way first.

“I’m looking to stay here; I’m looking to perform and to show out and bring the best of me on Saturday.”

WORLD TITLE BOUT BETWEEN CASIMERO AND BUTLER HEADLINES PROBELLUM’S MAIDEN LIVERPOOL SHOW

Liverpool fan-favourite Paul Butler will aim to unseat world champion John Riel Casimero as global boxing and media company Probellum brings its first show to Liverpool on Friday, April 22.

Butler will lead a stellar list of big-name fighters such as former WBA super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding, next generation stars including Liverpool-born brothers Peter and Joe McGrail, and the highly rated duo of Will Cawley and Luke McCormack.

In the night’s main event at the M&S Bank Arena, Filipino Casimero (31-4, 21 knockouts) puts his WBO bantamweight title on the line against the UK’s Butler (33-2, 15 knockouts) in a bout which was originally due to be held at Probellum’s inaugural December 2021 show before Casimero was unable to make weight.

“Liverpool is one of the most passionate boxing cities in the world and we are delighted to be holding our first show at the M&S Bank Arena in April,” said Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum.

“This is an absolutely fantastic card featuring a combination of world-class fighters, extremely talented aspiring stars and packed with local talent whose fans will no doubt create a truly unique atmosphere.

“With the likes of John Riel Casimero, Paul Butler, Rocky Fielding and the McGrail brothers all set to put on a great show, we fully expect some thrilling fights and a fantastic occasion.”

Local fans will be in full voice supporting recent Probellum signings the McGrail brothers, Peter (2-0, 1 knockout) and Joe (1-0, 1 knockout), who both secured second-round stoppage victories when they fought at the M&S Bank Arena on the Connor Benn versus Chris Algieri undercard in December.

Also on the card are the Probellum duo of rising-star Cawley (1-0) who will be aiming to build on his impressive debut victory in November 2021 and former Olympian McCormack who is set to make his professional bow following a superb career at amateur level, during which time he represented Team GB.

Tickets for the Liverpool show can be purchased HERE.

KATIE TAYLOR VS. AMANDA SERRANO LONDON PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:

“An incredible building here for an incredible fight, an incredible moment for the sport of boxing. April 30 the undisputed Lightweight Championship between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano – live on DAZN from Madison Square Garden.

“We all felt and hoped that this event would be a game changer, this event would iconic, historic and break the records. Last week for the pre-sale we recorded the second biggest pre-sale in the history of boxing in 140 years at Madison Square Garden.

“Of course, this is the biggest female fight of all time but it’s also one of the biggest fights in boxing, April 30 the world will stop to watch these two great fighters change the sport and take women’s boxing to a new level.”

Joseph Markowski, EVP, DAZN:

“I think this is a fight that transcends not only women’s boxing but potentially if we get this right to transcend the sport of boxing. The energy in New York last week, the tickets sales, the turnout from the media today, the reaction on social media, Jake’s involvement. There are so many ingredients to this that give it the potential to really cut through.

“When you have the opportunity with a boxing event to really cut through to mainstream sport, you want to give it your best shot, and we’re determined to do that. We’ve got a couple of months to do that with a fantastic group of people pushing it, we’re really excited about the opportunity we’ve got to celebrate women’s sport and go beyond the four walls of boxing.

“Eddie and I have been in the States last week and he’s been stopped in the streets to talk about this fight far more than you would do for a women’s boxing event. I think that we’re seeing that it’s cutting through, we’re confident when we look at your numbers, the numbers on social media, the numbers on the content we’ve already got.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to grow our subscription audience and drive a massive audience on DAZN in many countries around the world – notably here in the UK, Ireland and over the States. A huge opportunity and one we’re really excited about.”

Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions:

“This all started because of you [Eddie] and Joe when Jake made his debut on DAZN just two years ago. To think we’re here now with the biggest fight in women’s history, the biggest fight in boxing this year, is of course a credit to Eddie Hearn, Matchroom, DAZN, to Katie and Amanda, but also to my partner Jake Paul.

“Jake in little over two years have shaken combat sports upside down and is now sitting next to Eddie Hearn as co-promoter at age 25. There’s a guy on Boxxer that claims to be the youngest promoter in the UK, the youngest promoter in the UK is sitting on this stage right now and his name is promoter Paul.

“Jake and I have been very fortunate in our careers today, mine longer than his given I’m a lot older, we don’t need to be doing this, but we want to be doing this. This is a privilege, an honour, this is something that’s disrupting sports as a whole led by Jake, Katie and Amanda.”

Jake Paul, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, professional boxer and content creator:

“This is very serious, I’m just excited for April 30th first and foremost. People better get their tickets at MSG.com because otherwise they’ll be sitting in the nosebleed section the way these tickets are selling.

“I want to give these ladies a round of applause for what they’re doing, what most people in boxing aren’t doing, the pound-for-pound two best going at it. This is what boxing needs more of whether it’s male or female, they’re putting it all on the line for this fight which is what makes it big.

“This is unprecedented and more boxers across the sport should take notes from these two ladies, make the big fights happen if you’re one of the pound-for-pound best and tell your promoters you want these fights. That’s what these ladies did and that’s why we’re here.

“To me it doesn’t matter because I’m passionate about it, if people want to show me respect then cool, if not then cool. I’m still going to be doing my thing but like the hat says, all I want to do is bring more to this sport than I took from it – that’s what I want to do.

“I believe Amanda will win, stylistically. All credit to Katie Taylor she has an amazing career and is an amazing person, but stylistically the way Amanda comes forward and her body shots. We saw Katie Taylor have a little bit of trouble with that against Persoon and she was head hunting and not necessarily going towards the body. That’s what Amanda brings, a power puncher that comes forward, unlimited cardio, that’s why I’m excited about this. Obviously, it’s going to be a great fight, but I believe in Amanda.”

Amanda Serrano, seven-weight World champion:

“I want to thank London for having me, it’s a beautiful city. The struggle has been real but I’m super happy and excited that I’ve finally get to see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel with this fight with Katie Taylor. We’re making history and that’s what I want to do, I want to continue to open the doors for the new generation coming into the sport.

“I’m a woman for equality and we all talk about equality, on this table multiple times, we’re making history at the Garden being the first women to headline. We’re making the biggest payday for both of us, and I think we should just continue to make this iconic, make changes to this game and if Katie Taylor is willing and ready and able to make this an equal fight of 12 rounds of 3 minutes. If we want to make change, I think we should pave it right now on DAZN. This is all about equality and we should make the change right now.

“I understand that this fight is iconic but if we want to make a change for the future and get people to notice it, get these promoters to not talk badly about women, I think we need to take a stand.

“My plan is to fight smart, to be smart on April 30. I know I have all the tools to beat Katie Taylor, I just have to go out there and be smart – victory will be mine.

“I have everything, there’s no questioning my heart, my skills, my power and my chin. There’s nothing I think Katie Taylor has that will answer the questions that need to be answered. I have Latin blood and all the heart in the world.”

Katie Taylor, undisputed World Lightweight champion:

“I don’t think changing to 12 3 minute rounds will make a difference, this event is already iconic the way it is. The fact the pre-sales are the second best in MSG history says it all really, this fight is more important than we realise, and this proves that the perceptions have changed already. Boxing is boxing regardless, and the fight is already iconic the way it is.

“I think we’re making a stand the way we’re actually fighting each other in the first place, the best fighting the best. This fight is going to determine the best pound-for-pound female fighter in the world so we’re already making a stand by taking this fight.

“This is the fight I’ve wanted from the get-go, ever since I turned pro, I had me sights set on Serrano. I’m just so excited the fight is happening now; I do genuinely believe this is the best fight and most exciting fight in boxing right now. The fact it’s headlining Madison Square Garden and the pre-sales were the second best in boxing history, means this fight is more important than we realise and proves that there is a strong appetite with the public for these big female fights.

“Not only are we breaking the ceiling for female purses, but we have actually changed perceptions of the sport and if our careers have only achieved that then all the hard days in the gym have been absolutely worth it.

“I’m obviously expecting the toughest fight of my career and I’m expecting that, I know that I won’t be found short on grit and heart, I know my mind can take me to places I have no right to go because I’ve been there before both in the gym and on big nights. The whole world has seen me do it, I don’t think anybody has ever asked the question has Katie got what it takes to go to that place and win the fight in the trenches, that question has been answered. I’m not sure that Amanda has answered that question yet and her legacy will depend on the answer to that question, and I guess we’ll find out April 30.”

Jordan Flynn flying after camp with Conor Benn and Joe Cordina

Jordan Flynn believes that training alongside Conor Benn and Joe Cordina has made him better than ever – as he prepares to return to the ring on this Friday’s action-packed #MTKFightNight.

Undefeated Flynn (3-0) takes on Marian Marius Istrate as part of the stacked card headlined by Danny Dignum’s WBO European middleweight title defence at York Hall in London this week, which will be broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.

Flynn was last in action in October, earning a dominant points win over Lee Connelly, and he has relished the time spent in camp with elite fighters such as Benn and Cordina.

Flynn said: “The plan is to get in as many fights as I can this year. Hopefully I can four, five or even six. I stay in the gym 24/7 and I’m working every day, so I’m always ready to fight.

“I was meant to fight a week before Christmas and had a full camp with Conor Benn and Joe Cordina, but then the guy didn’t even turn up on the day of the weigh-in. I’m now fighting on Friday and it’s good to get out and keep things moving.

“I’ve been getting better and better in the gym, so people haven’t seen what I’m about yet. I need to keep getting these fights to show what I can do. I know the level I can get to, so I need to get on the big platform to show my skills.

“Kevin Mitchell trains me and he’s like a second dad to me. I’ve moved up near the gym and I’m fully focused on boxing as that’s what it’s all about. I’m constantly sparring top fighters, and there’s no reason why I can’t be on that level soon as well.

“Even without the backing of a big promoter, I’ve still got a big fan base, so all I need is the fights. I’ll keep working hard and getting better and better.”

Elsewhere on Friday’s card, undefeated sensation Lee McGregor returns against Diego Alberto Ruiz, Nina Hughes takes on Bec Connolly, Bilal Fawaz makes his professional debut against Vladimir Fleischhauer, Joe Giles meets Lewis van Poetsch, plus Paul Ryan and George Mitchell are both in action.

TAYLOR AND SERRANO PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES FROM NEW YORK

Pound-for-pound stars meet for the first time ahead of historic showdown on April 30
TO SIGN UP TO THE EXCLUSIVE PRESALE, VISIT MSG.COM/TAYLORSERRANO

Presale begins at 12noon ET on Thursday February 3, with tickets on general sale at 12noon ET on Friday February 4 – tickets start at $56 (plus fees)

Years in the making, the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing between the pound-for-pound #1 and #2 fighters of the world is one that will not only make boxing history, but women’s sports history. MSG has hosted thousands of fights through its illustrious years, beginning more than a century ago on July 17, 1882; now, 140 years later, this matchup finally marks the very first time two female fighters are headlining a combat sports event at ‘The World’s Most Famous Arena’.

Irish icon Taylor (20-0 6 KOs) puts all the Lightweight belts on the line for the sixth time since winning them in June 2019 in a war with Delfine Persoon and seeing off the Belgian in a rematch in England before repelling the challenges of Miriam Gutierrez, Natasha Jonas, Jennifer Han and Firuza Sharipova – and there’s added spice to the fight as Taylor holds a win over Amanda’s sister Cindy in Boston back in October 2018.

Puerto Rican sensation Serrano (42-1-1 30 KOs) already has an unrivalled legacy in the sport as a seven-weight World champion. The Brooklyn based champion enters the momentous bout in sparkling form after knocking out Daniela Bermudez last March, dominating Yamileth Mercado in August and overpowering Miriam Gutierrez in two separate cards co-starring Jake Paul. Amanda was the 2021 Female Fighter of the Year for DAZN, ESPN and WBC among others.

Taylor and Serrano came face-to-face at MSG today for the first time since the fight was announced, and had the following to say:

Katie Taylor – undisputed World Lightweight champion

“I’ve had my eyes on Amanda Serrano and this is a fight I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time now.

“This is history right here and all of our hard work is going to be paid off for at this time.

“I think that this fight is the most exciting fight in the sport, not just female boxing. This really is the best fight in boxing right now.

“We are both great champions, she has a great record and she’s a great fighter. We have seen the likes of McCaskill and others; but I want to be the best fighter.”

Amanda Serrano – seven-weight World champion

“No time is better than right now. Happy Women and Girls in Sports Day … Women, we are changing the sport. I am honored to share the ring with Katie Taylor.

“I have to thank my coach for not accepting the first couple fights. He knew what I was worth and now we are working with MVP.

“I don’t need to talk bad about any of my opponents. I do all of my talking inside the ring.

“13 years, I’ve been professional and every other day I have wanted to quit… never did I imagine making the money I have today. I mean, headlining MSG, like what?”

Eddie Hearn – chairman, Matchroom Sport

“Welcome to the iconic Madison Square Garden here in New York for the history making occasion, April 30 the undisputed women’s lightweight world championship here from the Mecca of boxing MSG. The first time in 140 years of boxing and combat sport history, two females headline here.

“This is going to be not just the biggest female fights of all time, but one of the biggest fights of all time. Katie Taylor is a huge draw in Ireland and the UK, Amanda here in the US, both women have headlined on major events around the world.

“We expect to fill up the Garden completely, an unbelievable undercard being planned for April 30 already, two-division world champion Jessie Vargas will take on Liam Smith from Liverpool. The undisputed super-middleweight world championship between Crews-Dezurn and Cederroos also on the card, as well as many more to come.

“Thank you to everyone for their support, this feels like an iconic moment for the sport in boxing, a moment that a lot of us have worked very hard towards. As Jake said earlier, to those great fighters that have come before them, for now we celebrate Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano who will make history here at Madison Square Garden on April 30.”

Jake Paul – co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, professional boxer and content creator

“What an honor to be here at the historic Madison Square Garden, I want to give a big thanks to Jim Dolan and the entire MSG team for making history with us – for real.

“Women have been boxing since the early 1900’s but it wasn’t until 1999 that they were able to compete professionally. 23 years later here we are with one of the biggest fights ever headlined by two women at Madison Square Garden.

“Today is about Amanda and Katie, the two best female boxers in the world right now, they deserve this stage, this historic payday and they deserve to settle who is the pound for pound best which is why I’m excited to see this fight.

“It’s also about Anne Wolf, Christine Martin, Leila Ali, Mia St. John and so many other legendary boxers that helped lay the foundations for the ladies to be sitting here today. It’s about Clarissa Shields, Mikaela Mayer, Alycia Baumgardner and other amazing professionals currently in the sport. Most of all it’s about the future young women and girls all around the world who will see April 30 as a moment that made the impossible, possible, equality as it’s meant to be.”

“It’s an honor to be here with Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing, DAZN, MSG, we’re grateful to Katie Taylor and here team to commit to taking this fight. Of course, most of all we’re proud to stand with Amanda Serrano, the superstar, a woman who has dedicated her life to boxing. Now it’s time to start showing the commitment she has made and show the world how important women’s boxing is to people like bob Arum who misspoke earlier this week. He’s going to eat his words April 30 and see how impactful this fight, I’m excited to be here and let’s make history.

“I’m a fight fan, I fell in love with boxing and I’m passionate about boxing all the way around. When I met Amanda Serrano and I heard her story and how hard she’s worked, I see how hard she is trained, she’s getting paid pennies on the dollar and being taken advantage of from people in her career. She needed help and guidance, to be put on a pedestal – she’s a superstar.  I’m excited to be promotor Paul and we might be sitting next to each other a few more times in the future. I’ll always be involved in this sport and pushing to make boxing a better place.”

Joe Markowski – EVP, DAZN

“For us it’s an absolutely perfect event, you’ve got two top pound-for-pound women’s boxers in the world, for our UK and Irish business this is a huge opportunity and of course in the US as well. This is part of a really strong spring schedule that hopefully working with Matchroom and Golden Boy we’ll be able to add to in the coming weeks.”

“A huge opportunity for us, a lot of noise gets made about this being a historic women’s boxing event, for us this just makes great business sense. It’s a huge opportunity for the sport and women’s sport more broadly to stop, acknowledge and celebrate the progress that is being made in women’s sport.”

“Yourself [Eddie] and Matchroom have been long-time supporters of that, I think everything that Jake, Nakisa and MVP are doing to back this is going to bring long overdue eyeballs. We know from our broader global business outside of boxing that when the media and industries around sport gets behind women’s sport, eyeballs come, and they stay. The quality of competition is akin to men’s sport in the vast majority of cases.”

“We’re extremely excited about it, I think there’s a huge opportunity for all of us up here and the people we work with within our own businesses and our partners to use the next two months to push this to become a moment in time and a celebration – everyone at DAZN will be working towards that.”

Joel Fisher – EVP, MSG Marquee Events

“The reception and reaction to the fight when it was announced was incredible, everyone’s been really supportive, so I want to thank everyone for that. There’s no better place for this fight then Madison Square Garden, to make history, this is a long overdue fight and is the Mecca of boxing. This is where all the famous fighters, the biggest fights in the world have taken place, this is history, we are talking about history.”

“I’m sure that this fight between Amanda and Katie is going to really be something else, something to behold, it’s not only a great fight and history, the first time headlining the Garden, it’s just a great fight that people in boxing want to see. Forget about women just in general, this is just a great fight and it’s going to be a tremendous night.”

VARGAS AND SMITH CLASH ON TAYLOR-SERRANO UNDERCARD

Super-Welterweight crossroads battle leads New York undercard on April 30
Jessie Vargas and Liam Smith collide in a must-win Super-Welterweight clash at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday April 30, live worldwide on DAZN, leading the undercard for the historic clash between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, brought to you by Matchroom Boxing and Most Valuable Promotions.

Vargas (29-3-2 11 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time since his narrow reversal at the hands of Mikey Garcia in Texas in February 2020. The former two-weight World champion is hungry to become a three-time ruler, and the 32 year old is training for the Smith clash while running his political campaign to represent Nevada’s 4th Congressional District.

Smith (30-3-1 17 KOs) will defend the WBA International strap he won in his last outing, where he stopped local rival Anthony Fowler in eight rounds in October at the M&S Arena in Liverpool, bouncing back in style from a slender loss in Russia to Magomed Kurbanov in May. The 33 year old held the WBO World title in 2015-16, and now sits at #4 in the WBA rankings and eyeing two-time World champion status.

Vargas and Smith were due to meet this weekend in Phoenix, but COVID ruled the former out of the clash and Saturday’s bill will now be topped by Carlos Cuadras and Jesse Rodriguez battling for the vacant WBC World Super-Flyweight title live worldwide on DAZN. Vargas and Smith will come to the Big Apple all guns blazing, and both men believe they will end the career of the other on April 30.

“Thankfully I’m now through COVID,” said Vargas. “I want to show everyone I’m better than before, I’ve been working on things in the gym, so it’s not like I’ve had a two year lay-off.

“Liam is talking a lot, the fire is burning inside me. You don’t trash talk me, I’m coming in a different person. This will be an action-packed fight. I’ll exploit all of his weaknesses and take him out – My goal is to knock him out and retire him!

“It’s going to be an amazing night. Amanda and Katie are trailblazers for the sport, and I’m honored to be a part of an historic event in New York.”

“I’m buzzing and proud to be fighting at Madison Square Garden,” said Smith. “It’s one I can tick off my bucket list now along with Las Vegas; MSG is the pinnacle of boxing and everything happens for a reason so I am happy to be heading to New York on April 30. The main event is fantastic, Katie is always in exciting fights, and I am sure there will be lots of British and Irish fans there that will be backing me too.

“This fight is an itch that has needed scratching for a long time now and I want to beat Jessie and beat him well and move on. I hope that he turns up fit and healthy this time as I am aiming to retire him and send him into politics. He wants to move into politics, and I will give him a reason to concentrate on that 100 per cent.

“Jessie stopping me? I find that highly unlikely when only one person has done that and Jessie is no Canelo Alvarez. I fully intend on stopping him, being the first man to do it and adding my name to the names that have beaten him.”

BRYAN ACCEPTS DUBOIS CALL

TREVOR BRYAN SUCCESSFULLY defended his WBA world heavyweight title belt on Saturday night before swiftly responding to a message from across the Atlantic sent by one Daniel Dubois.

Dubois is in mandatory position and next in line for a shot at the WBA title after the governing body granted Bryan permission for a voluntary defence against the largely unknown Jonathan Guidry.

The unbeaten Bryan, 22-0, made harder work of the fight than many probably imagined and the 32-year-old had to rely on the scorecards, which recorded a split decision victory for the New Yorker.

Dubois, 17-1, quickly acknowledged his future opponent’s victory before adding ominously: “But you are in my way. See you soon.”

Bryan readily accepted his next challenge and indicated that he is prepared for an away fixture for what will be a second defence of the belt he won by defeating Bermane Stiverne at the beginning of last year.

“Indeed we will little homie,” responded the executor of 15 KOs. “Cause as I said my campaign overseas will be starting very soon!”

Bryan signed off by borrowing the catchphrase of the voluble former heavyweight contender Shannon Briggs.
