CHARLIE EDWARDS SIGNS FOR QUEENSBERRY PROMOTIONS

FORMER WBC World Flyweight champion Charlie Edwards has signed a multi-fight deal with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren.

He joins brother Sunny in the Queensberry Promotions camp and believes it’s only a matter of time before ‘The Croydon Klitschkos’ are fighting in world title contests on the same bill.

Edwards, 27, said: “I was with Eddie Hearn for six years and I needed to freshen things up. I feel this is the next chapter of my career.

“I have seen what Frank has done for my brother Sunny. He has done very well for him from the start.

“Frank really looks after his fighters as well. I felt I was taken for granted and I am looking forward to getting started with Frank as my promoter.

“I have chatted to Frank at Sunny’s fights and the timing was right.  My management MTK sorted the deal, my adviser thought it was best for me and the offer is great.”

Edwards (15-1, 6KOs) will be moving up from Flyweight to either Bantamweight or Super-Flyweight where he is ranked number two by the WBC in their world rankings.

Charlie vacated his WBC world crown after being severely weight-drained for his defence against Julio Cesar Martinez last August that ended in a no-contest.

He added: “The next fight is likely to be a gage to see where I’m at regarding my best weight. The main thing is keeping my world ranking at Super-Flyweight for now.

“I look at the Bantamweight champions. I’m not deluded and say,  ‘I’m world level’ at that weight because that would be stupid.

“If I go to Bantamweight I wont be rushing to get in with world level fighters. It will be building up over a few fights.

“I have Frank behind me and he is not going to chuck me in at the deep end. It’s going to be building into the world title picture.”

Edwards insists he is more than happy to box on one of the behind closed doors extravaganzas Warren has planned this summer.

His big hope is to fight on the same bill as his brother Sunny, who also has serious world title aspirations at Super-Flyweight.

Charlie who trains alongside his brother under Grant Smith in Sheffield said: “Just mentioning me and my brother fighting for world titles on the same bill gives a tingle down my spine.

“I did a bucket list some time ago. Sunny and myself fighting on the same show has always been there. That was another thing that made it perfect sense to join Frank because it can happen.

“We still try to outdo each other when we train. That is the beauty of it. We’re brothers, we have ultimate love and want the best for each other.

“We want to beat each other whether we’re sparring or on the track. We have progressed because we always push each other.”

Warren said: “I am absolutely delighted that Charlie has joined our team and we will work out a plan for him to become a two weight world champion.

“We have often spoke at my shows when Sunny has been boxing. We always got on well and shared a joke.

“The two brothers fighting for world titles on the same show isn’t a pipe-dream. We deliver and It is a realistic prospect.”

Charlie turned professional in January 2015. In his fifth fight he won the English Flyweight title against Louis Norman and two fights later added the WBC International Silver championship.

In September 2016 he fell short against high class Filipino John Riel Casimero in a IBF Flyweight title challenge, his only professional defeat.

Seven months later, Edwards outpointed Iain Butcher to become British Super-Flyweight champion, a crown now held by his younger brother, Sunny.

Charlie upset defending champion Cristofer Rosales on points to become WBC Flyweight title holder in December 2018. He made one successful defence three months later in a points decision against Angel Moreno.

Battle of the Big Hitters: Nathan Russo Vs Wilmer Gonzalez Added To Scott Harrison Undercard.

It may have been a bank holiday weekend in the United Kingdom, but Promoter Lee McAllister has been mightily busy finding a top quality replacement for the Danny Williams versus Lee Kellett showdown, that was due to co-headline along with Scott Harrison versus Paul Peers on the UK’s first behind closed doors event, which is expected to take place in late June or early July, subject to the Scottish Parliament announcement of the relaxing of the lockdown restrictions later this week.

The Aberdeen based Five Division World Champion and Promoter, seems to secured not only suitable replacement for the first of a planned fortnightly series of events, but one that will have boxing fans salivating, as today the Aberdeen Assassin announced that Stoke’s unbeaten knockout Artist Nathan Russo (3 Wins all by KO) is set to face big hitting Nicaraguan Wilmer Gonzalez (21-18-1 – 14 wins by KO).

On making the announcement McAllister said;

“Was gutted when Danny pulled out, him against Lee Kellett was a genuine fifty-fifty and that’s the kind of fights we want.

“When I found out Wilmer was still in the UK, it struck me straight away that him against Nathan Russo would be the perfect replacement.

“Both lads love to go forward and are known big punchers, Nathan has stopped everyone that’s stepped in the ring with him and Wilmer has stopped fourteen of his opponents, including WBF European Champion Tommy Jacobs back last September.

“It was a no brainer, it’ll be a cracking fight, an all out war that the fans will love.”

Nathan Russo versus Wilmer Gonzalez will feature on the undercard when Scott Harrison goes toe-to-toe with Paul Peers on the first of fortnightly series of ‘Behind Closed Doors’ events for TV.

Main support sees Orkney based ten time World Kickboxing Champion Caitlin Foran making her Professional Boxing Debut against York’s Carly Mackenzie.

The undercard also features Perth’s unbeaten Gary Wilson (3-0-0) facing off against Liverpool’s Scott McIntyre (4-1-0) and Aberdeen’s Liam Allan making his pro debut against Southend’s Dan Ballard.

The event will take place in Aberdeen and whilst no date can be announced at this time, it is anticipated that there will be an announcement this week by the Scottish Parliament, regarding lockdown restrictions being relaxed, and then a date can be set for either late June or early July.

The event will be broadcast live on Fite TV (worldwide) as well as delayed broadcast in the UK on Sports Channel Network (SCN) Channel 265 on Freeview/YouView.

Martin ‘Rogie’ Rogan Appointed to the BIBA Board as All Ireland Chairman.

Martin ‘Rogie’ Rogan Appointed to the BIBA Board as All Ireland Chairman.

The British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) announced earlier today that former Heavyweight star Martin ‘Rogie’ Rogan has been appointed the All Ireland Chairman, as well as joins the main board of the burgeoning organisation.

Rogie had a stellar career that see him not only add some big scalps to his belt but also achieved Tournament and Championship success.

In April 2008 Rogan won the Matchroom Boxing ‘Prizefighter’ Heavyweight Tournament, after beating Alex Ibbs in the Quarter Final by second round TKO. In the Semi-Final Rogie conclusively out pointed David Ferguson and earned his place in the final, where he beat David Dolan by unanimous decision to lift the coveted Prizefighter Trophy.

Eight months later Rogie beat former Olympic Gold Medallist Audley Harrison in a non-championship contest, which was main support for Amir Khan versus Oisin Fagan World Boxing Association (WBA) International Championship at the ExCel Arena in London.

Just two months later Rogie won the Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight Crown with an eleventh round stoppage victory over Matt Skelton.

In 2012 Rogie challenged for the Irish Heavyweight Crown at the Odyssey Arena Belfast, against none other than current unbeaten World Boxing Council (WBC) World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury.

Speaking from his home in Belfast, Rogie said;

“It’s a true honour to have been appointed Chairman of All Ireland for the British & Irish Boxing Authority.

“My role is multi-faceted and covers everything from rules and regulations, health & safety, licensing etc but personally I am really looking forward to actively working with BIBA’s fighters as well as encouraging more to join us.

“As such I look forward to positively representing both the fighters and BIBA as we drive forward doing greater and better things for boxing and giving fighters from all over Ireland a platform to shine on.”

AMAAR AKBAR SIGNS FOR QUEENSBERRY PROMOTIONS

OUTSTANDING AMATEUR TALENT Amaar Akbar has joined forces with Frank Warren to launch his professional career under the Queensberry Promotions banner.

The two-time national champion and six-time Yorkshire champion reached the final of the senior National Amateur championships at the age of 18, defeating the No.1 seed on his way to the last two. He was defeated by now promotional stablemate Sam Noakes in the final.

His performances in his opening bouts as a senior resulted in international recognition and a trial for the GB squad was pencilled in for this spring, only to be put on hold by the current restrictions on sporting participation.

He has now made the decision to turn professional and will be trained by his father Zahiran at the Warrior Breed gym in Dewsbury, having now completed his studies for a Level 3 Sports course at Bradford College.

The now 19-year-old super lightweight insists he harbours no regrets over making an early departure from the amateur ranks.”No, no, no, I was ready to turn pro straight way,” reported Akbar.

“I was going to go to the Elite Championships and I had the GB assessment as well, but as soon as I heard the news about Frank Warren I knew what I was going to do.

“I am delighted to sign because I have been watching Frank and all his fighters for all my life really. I am very happy and I couldn’t believe it.

“Even though I am 18 I have been sparring with pros for a long time and from 16 I was sparring world champions, so I am do not have any reservations over turning pro.

“My family have all been into boxing, my dad used to box a bit and I have always been into it. I have done MMA but boxing just stuck with me and I have gone with it.

“Asked to describe his style of fighting, Akbar considered that he will simply adapt to whoever is put in front of him.

“I can do everything really, I can box and I can fight. I think the main thing about me is I can adapt to everything and each opponent. I wouldn’t say I am flashy, but I can make people miss and I can make people pay. That is what I would say.

“I have always had a good following and I will do well on tickets. There are lots of amateurs in Dewsbury but I am the one leading the pack now with having such a big promoter.

“I am definitely excited and cannot wait to get going. It has got me through this present time, while I have always been training, but this has given me an extra boost.”

Promoter Frank Warren added: “I am delighted to add another top young prospect to the crop of fighters we have signed recently, who I am looking forward to seeing in action once we are up and running again.
Developing young fighters and making them into champions is what we do best and I believe Amaar has the talent to do big things in the sport and really make a name for himself.

Akbar’s first act as a Queensberry fighter was to speak to interviewer Dev Sahni as part of the ongoing Lockdown Lowdown series. That interview can be seen here.

British Boxing Commentator and Boxing TV Presenter Dan Hewitt has been appointed lead commentator by Go Sports & Entertainment, the broadcast division of the British & Irish Boxing Authority.

The first event of Hewitt’s tenure will be the upcoming Lee McAllister promoted ‘Behind Closed Doors’ event headlined by the returning former longtime World Boxing Organisation (WBO) World Featherweight King Scott Harrison versus Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Paul Peers, which will be the first of a proposed fortnightly ‘Behind Closed Doors’ series of boxing events for TV, as the current COVID-19 lockdown regulations in the United Kingdom are relaxed.

The Harrison versus Peers headed event will be broadcast live on Fite TV (worldwide) as well as delayed broadcast in the UK on Sports Channel Network (SCN) Channel 265 on Freeview/YouView.

Speaking from his home in Stoke-on-Trent, Hewitt said; “It is a pleasure to be the lead commentator for the British and Irish Boxing Authority’s broadcast events.

“I look forward to helping provide future collaborations between organisations both here and in the USA, to help give fighters exposure on the World stage, as I believe all fighters deserve the same treatment as the big names.

“It’s exciting times and there is no end to the possibilities this partnership has.”

I’m Elated To Be Fighting Scott Harrison, The Test For Me Is Finally Here Says Paul Peers

Earlier this week promoter Lee Mcallister announced that Orkney based Paul Peers would be challenging former longtime World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Featherweight World Champion Scott Harrison, on the first of a proposed fortnightly ‘Behind Closed Doors’ series of boxing events for TV, as the current COVID-19 lockdown regulations in the United Kingdom are relaxed.

Peers, whose record stands at seven wins and four losses, had a bit of a checkered start to his career, losing four of his first six fights, the turning point in his career came in September 2018, when he challenged then unbeaten Craig Kennerdale for the Professional Boxing Council (PBC) English title.

The fight was an all out war, one that Peers won by the closest of margins – Judges scorecards read: Adrian Thorne 78-78, Mark Wakefield 78-76, James Ancliff 78-77 and was rightly voted the 2018 ‘Fight of the Year’ at the British & Irish Boxing Authority Year End Awards.

Since that victory Peers has been on a winning streak, that has also seen him add further Championship belts to his collection. In April 2019 Peers stopped Grigoris Dunecs in the first round to secure the World Boxing League (WBL) and European Boxing League (EBL) European crowns.

Five months later Peers stopped Nicaraguan Pablo Narvaez in the third round of a non-championship contest, and just two months later went the distance and secured a solid points victory over Tanzanian hard man Amos Mwamakula, again in a non-championship contest.

Then in March this year Peers secured the Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Crown with a fourth round stoppage victory over Nicaragua’s Milton Arauz.

Speaking from his home in Orkney, Peers enthusiastically spoke about the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with the former longtime WBO Featherweight King Scott Harrison.

“Well what can I say, I’m elated to be fighting Scott Harrison, the test for me is finally here, it’s a fight that could not have come at a better time.

“I have asked for the best and hardest fights since turning pro, I’ve never wanted to fight journeymen, for me it always has to be someone with a winning record, as I believe I can box and fight.

“Since turning pro I have had some of the best experiences sparring with some of the top pros out there at my weight.

“A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get flown over to Tenerife to prepare Liam Walsh to defend his titles against Joe Murray and I was there for eight weeks training and sparring with the Walsh brothers.

“To live, train and breathe boxing with them has taught me a lot and I honestly believe I spent time with them for a reason, now I say this because Liam Walsh is the last person to beat Scott.

“It’s not a coincidence I believe, I spent three camps with them, and it seems just for this very moment.

‘I have dedicated my life to boxing, I am thirty three in September and I believe now I am in the prime of my boxing career.

“Stopping three of my last four opponents is good but nothing prepares you for the type of fight Scott is going to bring to me.

“I am ready for this test physically and mentally.”

Peers then went on to speak about his opponent Scott Harrison;

“I have had a lot of people say to me Scott’s finished as he’s over 40 years old, but my reply is always the same…

“When boxing is taken away from you, especially when you live and breathe it, it’s heart breaking and mentally very tough. NOW Scott’s been out for seven years, for whatever the reason may have been doesn’t matter at all.

“If he’s hungry and if he’s as passionate as he says he is, which I think he is, that says to me he’s dangerous.

“As they say a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter. Now I have found it hard to stay positive during lockdown but in the back of my mind I knew something would come along, it always does and lucky for me it has and I have that fire back and this is my opportunity to shine.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that’s made this fight possible, Gianluca Di Caro (BIBA Vice President), you already know how much I appreciate you and as for Lee McAllister (Promoter) I just could never praise him enough, the man is working magic for me and I’m so very grateful for what he’s doing for me.

“Finally I’d like to thank all my sponsors;  Steven Logie, Stewart Henderson, Kevin Casey, Magnus Flett, Thorfin Craigie, Liam Roberston, Danny Baine, Steve Norris, and  Paul Bentley. They have all supported me over the last 2 years and without them I wouldn’t be here and getting this fantastic opportunity to share the ring with Scott.”

Harrison vs Peers will co-headline along with a Heavyweight contest featuring Danny Williams, most famous for his 2004 knock out victory over Mike Tyson, against PBC International Champion Lee Kellett.

Main support sees Orkney based ten time World Kickboxing Champion Caitlin Foran making her Professional Boxing Debut against York’s Carly Mackenzie.

The undercard also features Perth’s unbeaten Gary Wilson facing off against Liverpool’s Scott McIntyre and Aberdeen’s Liam Allan making his pro debut against Southend’s Dan Ballard.

The event will take place in Aberdeen and whilst no date can be announced at this time, it is anticipated that there will be an announcement on Thursday this week by the Scottish Government, regarding lockdown restrictions being reduced, and then a date can be set for either late June or early July.

Earlier this week the British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) Vice President Gianluca Di Caro issued guidelines for ‘Behind Closed Doors’ events for Live Broadcast sanctioned by the burgeoning organisation.

Mr Di Caro stated that “The series of events will take place behind closed doors and without spectators in attendance.

“There will be mandatory COVID-19 testing for all taking part or officiating the event and rapid result testing will be undertaken at the venue.

“There will be full personal protection equipment for all involved in the event, as well as hand sanitiser etc.

“Additionally there will be regular temperature taking on-site for everyone taking part.

“Each boxer will be required to wear a surgical mask, which can only be removed once they have entered the ring, however the referee must keep his mask and surgical gloves on, along with everyone ringside, including coaches, officials and broadcast technicians.

“Spit buckets will be replaced with enclosed containers along with a funnel and tube, and full medical coverage, including an air ambulance, will be on site.”

The event will be broadcast live on Fite TV (worldwide) as well as delayed broadcast in the UK on Sports Channel Network (SCN) Channel 265 on Freeview/YouView.

Scott Harrison Returns to Headline UK’s First Post Lockdown ‘Behind Closed Doors’ Event

Aberdeen based Promoter and Current World Boxing Union (WBU) and Professional Boxing Council (PBC) Super Welterweight World Champion Lee McAllister announced earlier today that longtime former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Featherweight World Champion Scott Harrison is set to return to the fray and face Orkney based PBC International Champion Paul Peers on the first ‘Behind Closed Doors’ of a proposed fortnightly Boxing series for TV.

On making the announcement McAllister said, “It’s great to finally get Scott back into the ring in a very tasty challenge in his first fight back against Paul Peers.

“They’re both signed with Assassin Boxing so the fight was easy to make.

“Paul’s found some form of late, including winning the PBC international title and Scott’s looking to catapult himself back into the World scene so it’s got the makings of a cracking fight.

“Both guys are willing to put everything on the line and I for one am very, very       excited to see this fight. I fully expect fireworks right from the opening bell, it’s     definitely gonna be a war!”

Harrison vs Peers will co-headline along with a Heavyweight contest featuring Danny Williams, most famous for his 2004 knock out victory over Mike Tyson, against PBC International Champion Lee Kellett.
