‘The Savage’ prepared for backyard brawl
Sam Eggington says his highly-anticipated showdown with Ted Cheeseman at the top of the opening week of Matchroom Fight Camp on Saturday August 1 is “all or nothing” for both men as he sets his sights on a World Title Eliminator at 154lbs. 

Former European Welterweight Champion Eggington (28-6, 17 KOs) has notched four straight wins since losing to Liam Smith back in March 2019, picking up the IBF International Super-Welterweight Title on away soil against Orlando Fiordigiglio in September. 

He puts that belt, along with his No.5 ranking with the IBF, on the line against Cheeseman, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US, knowing that a win could propel him towards a surprise World Title shot and a loss could undo all of his hard work over the past year. 

The stakes are equally as high for Cheeseman who finds himself in a must-win situation following two losses and one draw in his last three fights. Everything is on the line for ‘The Big Cheese’ and another loss could prove to be disastrous for his career. 

“You only have to watch Ted fight to know that he doesn’t give up when it gets hard,” said Eggington. “I have full faith in myself and if anyone can make him give up, I’ll be that guy. It’ll be a good fight while it lasts. The way we both fight, it’s going to gel for a war, but I genuinely think I’ve got enough to get the win. 

“I’m confident with this fight. Eddie gave me a list of names for potential opponents and we picked him out because it’s a good fight and one we can win. It’s not a fight that worries me like others might have. I’ll make sure I walk out with the win. Any way, shape or form, I’ll get the win. 

“I’ve never been in a position to have an argument for some sort of Eliminator and I think I am now with the IBF belt. That’s the aim once we get past Ted next month. It’s all or nothing for the both of us. That’s the way I live in general. 

“It’s in the garden and there won’t be a crowd but that doesn’t matter to me. If I’m having a fight and it’s a packed-out arena, I want to win that fight. If I’m having a fight in an empty room, I’m having a fight and I still want to win. I’m going to bite down on my gum-shield and do anything I can to win.”

EPIC TAYLOR VS. PERSOON REMATCH CONFIRMED FOR MATCHROOM FIGHT CAMP

Rivals collide on August 22 following New York WAR
The biggest rematch in the history of women’s boxing has been confirmed for Matchroom Fight Camp as Katie Taylor defends her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight World Titles against Delfine Persoon on Saturday August 22, live on Sky Sports Box Office. 
 
Taylor (15-0, 6 KOs) completed her fairy-tale journey from Olympic Gold to Undisputed Lightweight World Champion with a thrilling but controversial points win over Belgium’s Persoon on a historical night at the world-famous Madison Square Garden on the Joshua vs. Ruiz bill last year. 
 
After a bloody and brutal battle that captivated the New York crowd, the Irish star added Persoon’s WBC belt to her IBF, WBO and WBA Titles to hold all four at 135lbs and cement her place as the number one Lightweight on the planet.
 
The 34-year-old went on to create more history at Manchester Arena in November when she dethroned WBO Super-Lightweight World Champion Christina Linardatou to become a two-weight World ruler – becoming only the third Irish boxer to win World Titles in two weight classes.
 
Persoon (44-2, 18 KOs) held the WBC strap for five years, making nine successful defences in that reign, before losing it to Taylor in a Fight of the Year contender. Despite losing on two of the judges’ scorecards, Persoon was convinced she’d won after ten rounds of relentless action and has been lobbying for a rematch ever since. 
 
“With Amanda Serrano not taking the fight I wanted the biggest fight possible in August and I think a second Persoon fight is one that everyone wants to see,” said Taylor. “I’ve been looking forward to a rematch ever since the first fight and I’m delighted it’s been made. It was definitely very close first time around, but I felt I deserved the win and I intend to leave no doubts in the rematch.”

Persoon said: “I am ready to get the victory following the injustice last June in New York, not by words but in the ring – I am ready!”

Boxing TV’s Dan Hewitt Interviews Former Kickboxing World Champion Caitlin Foran Ahead of her Pro Boxing Debut on the 18th July

Boxing TV’s Dan Hewitt caught up with Kickboxing World champion Caitlin Foran, ahead of her Professional Boxing debut, against York’s Carly Mackenzie on the undercard of longtime World Boxing Organization (WBO) Featherweight King Scott Harrison versus Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Paul Peers that takes place ‘behind closed doors’ at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen that will be exclusively broadcast on the 18th July 2020 live on FITE.TV.

Dan: What got you in to the sport of boxing?

Caitlin: So I started kickboxing when I was 8 years old, for no other reason than, I was just an active kid that wanted to do everything. It definitely wasn’t a talent of mine but I started to really enjoy it so I kept going, taking a few beatings a long the way and eventually dropping all my other activities so that I was just focusing on kickboxing. 

I started going away to competitions, winning some, losing some but never giving up and eventually working my way to becoming world champion. 

Myself and my coach started to realise that I was far better with my hands so decided to look into boxing and was giving the opportunity of a UKBC International title fight as my first boxing fight which I went on to win and after that I decided it was time to hang up the kicks and focus on boxing.

Dan: Tell us about the things you achieved in kickboxing

Caitlin: So I was quite a late starter in competing regularly as getting off the island can be pretty expensive and coming from a large family it just wasn’t always possible. So it wasn’t until just before gaining my black belt that I really started competing and won my first fights which was at a Scottish championship where I won 2 golds, I then started competing more often, every couple months and picked up some British and European titles and then went on to world championships where by the end of my kickboxing career I had accumulated 10 World Championships across a few different organisations.

Dan: What was the hardest challenge to move from kickboxing to boxing?

Caitlin: In kickboxing, a lot of what you do with your hands is to set you up for kicks and open up targets to get kicks in. So retraining my muscle memory to keep my feet more grounded was definitely a challenge for me in the beginning but didn’t take long before I got used to it.

Dan: What gym do you fight out off?

Caitlin: Currently, Orkney Boxing Club, coached and managed by Paul Peers.

Dan: What do you hope to achieve as a professional boxer?

Caitlin: Becoming a professional has already been a massive thing for me, I am Orkney’s first female professional boxer (and I think professional boxer in general) so that for me is amazing already and now I’m just training hard, I’ll take every fight as it comes, learning and growing from every experience and one day hopefully make it to the top.  Making it to World Champion is the ultimate goal which would be amazing.

Dan: What have you got to say to your fans?

Caitlin: I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone that has supported me so far and continues to do so, it really does mean the world to know I have people in my corner backing me! Due to a minor injury the Nathan Russo versus Wilmer Gonzalez contest, that was due to take place on the undercard of former World Boxing Organization (WBO) longtime World Featherweight King Scott Harrison, when he faces Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Paul Peers on the 18th July, has been put back to the third episode, which takes place on the 15th August, of the LET BATTLE COMMENCE fight series that is broadcast exclusively live on FITE.TV. 

Today promoter, and six time, five division World Champion, Lee McAllister announced that the bout between unbeaten Lewis Mulberry versus Johnson Tellez will be moved forward from the 1st August LET BATTLE COMMENCE event as a replacement for Russo vs Gonzalez.

Lewis Mulberry versus Johnson Tellez will feature on the undercard when Scott Harrison goes toe-to-toe with Paul Peers on the first of the LET BATTLE COMMENCE series of ‘Behind Closed Doors’ events that will be broadcast exclusively live on FITE.TV.

Former Sky Senior Director Derek Hanlon Appointed BIBA/GSE Director of Production Ahead of ‘Let Battle Commence’ Series on FITE.TV.

Steve Webber, Head of Broadcasting at Go Sports & Entertainment, the broadcast division of the British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA), today announced that former Sky Senior Director Derek Hanlon has been appointed as Director of Production.

During his forty year career Hanlon has produced and directed a myriad of films, commercials and television programming, including entertainment, music, art and documentaries, as well as directed a diverse range of sport programming, including Superbikes, Superleague Formula Racing, Live Davies Cup Tennis, weekly ATP Tennis highlights, American Football, US PGA Tour, World Cup of Golf, Irish Open, Ladies European Golf, Ultra Sport, Opal Supersports News and within the Sport of Boxing itself Matchroom Boxing and Ringside. 

The first event of Hanlon’s tenure will be the upcoming Lee McAllister promoted ‘Behind Closed Doors’ event headlined by the returning former longtime World Boxing Organisation (WBO) World Featherweight King Scott Harrison versus Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Paul Peers on the 18th July 2020, which will be the first of the ‘Let Battle Commence’ series of ten UK boxing events for TV, which will initially take place ‘Behind Closed Doors’, until the current COVID-19 lockdown regulations in the United Kingdom are relaxed.

DUBOIS vs JOYCE BLOCKBUSTER TO TAKE PLACE ON OCTOBER 24

BRITISH boxing’s Heavyweight super-fight between unbeaten KO Kings ‘Dynamite’ Daniel Dubois and ‘Juggernaut’ Joe Joyce will now take place at The 02 Arena, London on Saturday October 24.

The showdown between British, Commonwealth, WBC Silver and WBO International champion Dubois and fellow Londoner Joyce, an Olympic Silver medallist, had been scheduled for July 11 but the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the date shift.

Government guidelines will continue to be strictly followed but with lockdown being eased promoter Frank Warren is optimistic that the battle, dubbed ‘Seek And Destroy’, will finally take place in October.

Joyce (10-0, 9 KOs) and Dubois (14-0, 13 KOs) are within touching distance of a world title challenge and the winner will be in line to land a mandatory contender’s position with one of the major governing bodies, as well as adding the vacant EBU European Heavyweight Championship to their trophy cabinets.

Warren said: “It will be a fight to remember and what a boost for British boxing.

“Everyone wants to see it. Lockdown has meant a delay, but we all want the fight to take place in October and we are hopeful that the government will give us the all clear.

“What a position the winner will be in. They will be nailed on for a world title shot in 2021.”

Dubois, 22, who is ranked number five by the WBO  and seven in the latest WBC ratings said: “I’ll be ready to go in October for sure.

“It has been tough during lockdown, but I have ticked over and I’m back in the Peacock gym helping my sparring partner Dorin Krasmaru get ready for his behind closed doors fight on Frank Warren’s bill on July 10.

“Hopefully in the near future I will be able to get some good overseas sparring in. I’ll be ready for October 24, so I hope Joe is coming prepared.”

Foe Joyce, 34, won the Commonwealth title in just his fourth fight and his best win came against former WBC world champion Bermane Stiverne via a sixth round KO in February 2019. The London man aims to top that victory when he tackles Dubois and doesn’t mince his words when discussing his young opponent.

“It was great news to get the new date so I can finally punch up Dubois,” said the Putney man who is already highly ranked by the WBC.

Joyce is ready to rev up his training and added: “Obviously once lockdown started I had a good idea we wouldn’t meet in July, but I was always staying on top of training.

“Now gyms are open for athletes I can kick on and just keep my focus on the new date, finally settling the score with Dubois and moving on to a world title fight.”

‘LET BATTLE COMMENCE’ TEN UK EVENT SERIES BEGINS 18TH JULY LIVE & EXCLUSIVE ON FITE TV

10 LIVE EVENT SERIES FROM THE UK BEGINS 18TH JULY LIVE & EXCLUSIVE ON FITE TV 

With a distinct lack of live boxing events, due to the global COVID-19 Pandemic, the British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) today announced a series of Ten Professional Boxing Events under the ‘Let Battle Commence’ banner, which will be broadcast live and exclusive on FITE TV starting on the 18th July 2020.

Initially the events, promoted by Six Time and Five Division World Champion Lee McAllister, will take place behind closed doors at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen. Each of the first three events is restricted to five contests and a maximum of six rounds per contest in order to comply with the United Kingdom Government’s Guidelines.

Once the restrictions on spectators are lifted the series will feature more contests, as well as Championships and go on the road, with events taking place in London, Liverpool, Barrow-in-Furness and Derby before returning to Aberdeen for the final of the series on December 5th.

Each of the events will feature established Champion(s) heading the card, supported by equally matched contests between up and coming prospects, with at least one being a female contest and each event will also feature a debut contest in order to introduce up and coming future prospects to the world stage.

The first event, which takes place on Saturday 18th July 2020, is headlined by former longtime World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Featherweight King Scott Harrison versus Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Paul Peers.

Main support sees Orkney based ten time Kickboxing World Champion Caitlin Foran making her Professional Boxing Debut against York’s Carly Mackenzie.

One of the most eagerly awaited contests on the show pits Stoke’s unbeaten Nathan Russo (3-0-0, all via KO) versus Nicaraguan Wilmer Gonzalez (21-18-1, 14 wins by KO).

Someone’s ‘0’ has to go when Perth’s Adam Stewart (1-0-0) faces Liverpool’s Steve Sunners  (4-0-0) in a six rounder

The final fight on the card sees Aberdeen’s Liam Allan making his professional debut against Southend’s Daniel Ballard.

The second event, on the 1st August 2020, is headlined by World Boxing Union (WBU) & Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Nathan Beattie in action against a yet to be named opponent.

Main support sees Worksop’s Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Silver Champion Nicola Hopewell versus York’s Tasha Boyes in a non-championship contest.

Exciting unbeaten prospect Lewis Mulberry (3-0-0) takes on tough Nicaraguan Johnson Tellez in his first six rounder.

Denny’s Kevin Traynor (2-0-0) will have to be right on his game on the 1st August as he faces Patras, Greece’s Paris Stavropoulos (2-1-0).

Final fight on the card sees Aberdeen Heavyweight Craig Dick making his professional debut, against UK based Lithuanian Tomas Vaicickas (1-2-0).

The third event in the series, which takes place on Saturday 15th August 2020, sees the main man, Lee McAllister, himself headlining, against a yet to be named opponent.

The main support features a rematch between Leeds’ unbeaten Jack Jones (4-0-0) against Colchester’s Dean Porter (2-2-0), last time the two faced each other, back in April 2019, it was an all action Battle Royale.  

Sheffield’s stand-out Teenage England Amateur Pathway Squad Star Hollie Towl will make her professional debut, against Switzerland’s World Boxing Council (WBC) Muay Thai World Champion Natacha De Almeida, who will also be making her professional boxing debut.

Liverpool’s Scott McIntyre, who was due to box Gary Wilson on the 18th July, until Wilson was forced to withdraw with an injury, will be in action against either Wilson if he is fully recovered or against a yet to be named opponent.

The final fight on the card sees Kenny Allan (1-0-0) against Chadwell Heath’s Jordan Smith.

It is anticipated that from September the Government guidelines will allow longer fights, possibly even Championship contests, as well as an increase in the number of contests per event, as such the cards for events from 5th September will be announced closer to the dates.

The dates for the rest of the series are: 

5th September 2020 – Featuring the professional debut of sensational England Pathway Squad Star Eleanor Coulson

19th September 2020 – headlined by World Boxing Foundation (WBF) European Champion Navid Iran versus Sandy Robb.

3rd October 2020 – Card to be Announced

7th November 2020 – Card to be Announced

21st November 2020 – Card to be Announced

5th December 2020 – Card to be Announced

Harrison versus Peers, the first in the series, will take place on Saturday 18th July 2020 at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen and whilst no spectators will present, the event will be broadcast live and exclusive on Fite TV (worldwide) as well as delayed broadcast in the UK ten days later on Sports Channel Network (SCN) Channel 265 on Freeview/YouView.

BIBA COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS UPDATE – GUIDELINES FOR RETURN TO SPARRING & COMPETITION

The British & Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA) Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Professor M.R. Graham MBChB; JCPTGP; PhD; FRSM; MPhysoc; BASEM; MICR; MCSFS; PCCMH; APIL Expert; FSB issued the following guidelines in order that Professional Boxers and Elite Amateur Boxers may return to Training, Sparring and Ultimately Competition.

PLEASE NOTE: That from last week (June 4th) that Professional and Elite Amateur Boxers have been able to return to training, and from this Saturday (June 13th) Sparring may resume if the following guidelines are strictly adhered to.

PLEASE NOTE 2: These guidelines relate to ENGLAND only currently, updates will be issued only once the guidelines for WALES, IRELAND, NORTHERN IRELAND & SCOTLAND are updated by the relevant Sports Ministry.

BIBA Medical Officers and Scientists only provide credible SCIENTIFIC information 

BIBA provides the following MANDATE for Boxers, Trainers and Affiliates considering returning to Boxing Training & Sparring for Professional Competition.

All Boxers, Trainers and Affiliates should continue to follow rational scientific advice relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

All Affiliates should adhere to unprejudiced scientific Government rules on social distancing when travelling to and from the training venue.  

Training can take place in any formerly approved gymnasium. 

Do not attend any designated training areas, if you have had any symptoms of an upper or lower respiratory tract infection in the previous fourteen (14) days: A Cough, of any description, in the previous fourteen (14) days requires a valid severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Antibody Test by BIBA Medical Officials.

All personal Boxing equipment, clothing and refreshment containers must not be shared. All equipment must be cleaned with soap and water after use. 

BIBA advises that trainers use appropriate face masks, and disposable gloves.

Do not attend the competition venue, if you have had any symptoms of an upper or lower respiratory tract infection in the previous fourteen (14) days, unless approved by BIBA Medical Officials and have had a valid severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Antibody Test conducted by BIBA Medical Official.

UK BOXING RETURNS 18TH JULY – HARRISON VS PEERS HEADLINES FIRST EVENT LIVE ON FITE TV

Finally Live Boxing returns to TV screens, following the seemingly never ending lockdown. No surprise that America has led the way, with the current World Boxing Organization (WBO) Featherweight World Champion Shakur Stevenson against Felix Caraballo in a non-championship contest, which takes place today in Las Vegas, and beginning next month the United Kingdom will follow suit.

The first Post-Lockdown ‘Behind Closed Doors’ event in the UK is set for Saturday 18th July 2020 and will be headlined by former World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Featherweight King Scott Harrison, who will face Professional Boxing Council (PBC) International Champion Paul Peers in a non-championship contest that takes place in Aberdeen and will be broadcast live and exclusive on fite.tv.

Main support sees Orkney based ten time World Kickboxing Champion Caitlin Foran making her Professional Boxing Debut against York’s Carly Mackenzie.

An intriguing battle between two big bangers, Stoke’s unbeaten Nathan Russo (3-0-0, all via KO) versus Nicaraguan Wilmer Gonzalez (21-18-1, 14 wins by KO), was recently added to the undercard

The undercard also features Perth’s unbeaten Gary Wilson (3-0-0) facing off against Liverpool’s Scott McIntyre (4-1-0) and Aberdeen’s Liam Allan making his pro debut against Southend’s Daniel Ballard.

Harrison versus Peers will take place on Saturday 18th July 2020 at the Northern Hotel in Aberdeen and whilst no spectators will present, the event will be broadcast live and exclusive on Fite TV (worldwide) as well as delayed broadcast in the UK ten days later on Sports Channel Network (SCN) Channel 265 on Freeview/YouView.

JOHN HEDGES SIGNS WITH MATCHROOM BOXING

Decorated amateur standout inks deal with Eddie Hearn
Decorated amateur standout John Hedges has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and will campaign at Super-Middleweight after making the decision to turn professional with S-JAM Boxing in April.
 
The elusive 6’5” southpaw won four National and seven International titles during a glittering spell in the unpaid code in which he amassed an extremely impressive record of 44 fights and 40 wins fighting all over Europe. 
 
Known as ‘Gentleman John’, the gifted 18-year-old prospect fights out of the Hoddesdon Boxing Academy and joins a Matchroom stable that boasts two undefeated Super-Middleweight World Champions in Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders. 
 
Based in Takeley, Essex Hedges is confident his flashy style will suit the professional game and believes he is in the perfect place to start making a name for himself in the 168lbs division when boxing resumes later this year. 
 
“I’m delighted to be teaming up with Matchroom Boxing,” said Hedges. “It’s a massive move for me and I can’t wait to get started. I’m a long 6’5” southpaw and I’m everyone’s worst nightmare. With my size and ability, I honestly believe that I’ll go all the way and become a young World Champion, if not the youngest. 
 
“I’ve got the best manager and coach behind me, and now I’ve got the best promoter behind me in Eddie Hearn. The opportunities are going to be endless for me, this is what dreams are made of. I’m only young but I’ve been around the block and I’m ready to take over. 
 
“I’m flashy, entertaining and I always put on a show. Joining Matchroom and looking up to the likes of Callum Smith and Billy Joe is going to take my fighting to another level. As soon as that opportunity comes, we’ll push for any titles there is. We’re not avoiding anyone; we believe that we’re as good as the best right now. It’s about taking my chance.”
