BENN FACES ALGIERI IN LIVERPOOL

Rising Welterweight star clashes with former World Champion on December 11
Rising Welterweight star Conor Benn will face former World Champion Chris Algieri at the top of a huge night of boxing at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on Saturday December 11, live worldwide on DAZN

‘The Destroyer’ (19-0, 12 KOs) maintained his perfect record with a shutout points win over Mexico’s Adrian Granados on the Lara vs. Warrington 2 bill in September after he was given a deafening welcome by over 20,000 Leeds fans, and the Essex native is looking to end a huge year in style as he pushes towards more titles.

New York’s Algieri (25-3, 9 KOs), a former WBO Super-Lightweight World Champion, represents a big step-up in class for 25-year-old Benn having shared the ring with some of the biggest names in the sport including modern legend Manny Pacquiao, former unified Super-Lightweight ruler Amir Khan and unified Welterweight World Champion Errol Spence Jr.

“To headline in a city like Liverpool you need to be in the ring against a world class operator,” said Benn. “Chris has done it all, a former World Champion and exactly the opponent I need to gain experience from.

“We expect Algieri to bring his best, but I want him deep in the trenches with me, I want to use this opportunity to display my skills and ability against a quality fighter to prepare me and take another step closer to a World Title. A former World Champ vs. a very, very hungry contender, I can’t wait for December 11.”

“This has a big fight feel to it and I’m thrilled to be back on this type of stage,” said Algieri. “The UK has brilliant fans and I’m looking forward to performing in front of those legendary crowds.

“December 11 with be a masterclass with me utilising my deep bag of skills and experience. Benn is hungry and tough but this is a huge step up in class for him. I’m coming to show that it’s not his time yet. I still got the goods and the world will see it once again come fight night.”

“Chris Algieri represents Conor Benn’s toughest test yet”, said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights at DAZN. ‘We believe Conor will be a superstar of the sport and we are incredibly excited to see him finish his breakout year in style, live and exclusive worldwide on DAZN.”

MTK Fight Night returns to Newcastle next month

MTK Fight Night will head back to Newcastle for an action-packed event on November 13 – headlined by world-ranked Thomas Patrick Ward taking on WBA #5 Leonardo Padilla.

The card will be co-promoted alongside Phil Jeffries and be held at the Rainton Meadows Arena next month, and will be broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.

Undefeated Ward (30-0-1, 4 KOs) is back following his win over Edy Valencia Mercado in June, as he looks to build on his current rankings of #3 with the WBO, #8 with the IBF and #11 with the WBA and move a step closer to a world title shot.

Standing in his way is fellow highly-ranked fighter Padilla (20-3, 14 KOs), with the hard-hitting Venezuelan dangerman attempting to spoil the party and come out on top against the local favourite.

In the co-main event, unbeaten rising star Shabaz Masoud (8-0, 2 KOs) has a huge step up in competition, as he goes up against Diego Ruiz (23-3, 12 KOs), who previously fought Michael Conlan in Belfast back in 2019.

Popular favourite Joe Laws (10-1, 5 KOs) makes his return, plus an intriguing battle at super-lightweight sees Declan Geraghty (20-5, 5 KOs) square off with Kieran Gething (10-2-2, 2 KOs).

Rounding up the main card, Joe Maphosa (10-1, 1 KO) meets Adam Yahaya (21-7-2, 10 KOs), and undefeated Terry Wilkinson (8-0) clashes with Jordan Ellison for the vacant Northern Area super-lightweight title.

Some of the best local talent will also be on display on the undercard, as Jordan Barker-Porter (1-0), Adam Cope (1-0), Sam Menzies (2-0), and debutant Nathan Cumminsky all compete.

MTK Global Promoter Lee Eaton said:“We’re delighted to head back to Newcastle and work alongside Phil Jeffries to put on a stacked card next month. We’ve had some memorable nights in the North East in the past and I’m sure it will be more of the same in November.

“The main event sees two fighters with high world-rankings in Thomas Patrick Ward and Leonardo Padilla going head to head, and Ward will be looking to secure another impressive win that can potentially set up a world title shot in 2022.

“Shabaz Masoud is having a massive step up in just his ninth professional fight against Diego Ruiz, and it will be a clear sign to see just how talented he potentially is. It’s brilliant to have Joe Laws back as well, and we’re sure he’ll bring another passionate army of fans with him.

“Declan Geraghty vs. Kieran Gething is a great fight on the card, and with the likes of Joe Maphosa, Terry Wilkinson, Jordan Barker-Porter, Adam Cope and even more all fighting too, it’s certain to be a can’t miss event.”

Further news on the MTK Fight Night in Newcastle will be announced in the coming days and weeks.

I COULDN’T ASK FOR A BETTER DEBUT! SAYS MCGRAIL

Decorated amateur makes professional bow in Liverpool
Peter McGrail says he couldn’t have wished for a better platform to make his professional debut on as he prepares to battle Ed Harrison in a six-round Super-Bantamweight contest on the undercard of Liam Smith vs. Anthony Fowler at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool this Saturday October 9, live worldwide on DAZN

One of Merseyside’s most decorated amateur boxers, McGrail first broke through with bronze medals at the Youth Olympics and World Youth Championships back in 2014. The gifted southpaw then won gold at the European Championships in Kharkiv in 2017 before winning Commonwealth gold a year later in Australia.

The 25-year-old Liverpudlian, who trains out of the renowned Everton Red Triangle Gym on Albion Street under Paul Stevenson, was hotly-tipped for a Featherweight medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but succumbed to a premature defeat against Thai fighter Chatchai-decha Butdee in the opening round.

“I won seven National Titles growing up,” said McGrail. “I went to the Youth Worlds and got a bronze. Then I qualified for the Youth Olympics and got a bronze. It was after that I joined Team GB. My best achievement was when I won the Europeans fighting a Ukrainian in Ukraine in the final. I knew if I won that I was the first ever Scouser.

“You’ve seen the Scousers that have come out of this city. For me to win that and be the first ever Scouser was boss for my family. It was boss for me and boss for the gym. I needed the Olympic medal, but it wasn’t to be. I’m still proud of my career. It was sad but it was exciting at the same time because I knew it was time for the new chapter to begin which I’ve been waiting for for years.

“I’m a proud Scouser, whenever there’s a Scouser fighting I’m always rooting for them. The likes of Tony Bellew and Callum Smith – former World Champions. Everyone in our gym, we’re all looking to follow in their footsteps. I love Liverpool. I trained down in Sheffield for years but I always used to miss home. When I’d come home I was always a bit happier.

“I can’t ask for a better debut. It’s not just a little show in Liverpool, it’s a proper heavy bill. It’s a naughty main event. I’m looking forward to it. I want to become a World Champion. I want to bring big nights to Liverpool. I want to make my mum, my dad and my family proud, and hopefully make loads of money as well. I’m going to be pushing on to bigger and better things.”

McGrail vs. Harrison is part of a stacked night of action in Liverpool, former WBO Super-Welterweight Word Champion Liam Smith (29-3-1, 16 KOs) meets 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian Anthony Fowler (15-1, 12 KOs) in a massive all-Liverpool clash for local bragging rights, Ted Cheeseman (17-2-1, 10 KOs) puts his British Super-Welterweight Title on the line against Troy Williamson (16-0-1, 12 KOs) following his brilliant stoppage win over James Metcalf in Gibraltar, WBA Bantamweight World Champion Shannon Courtenay (7-1, 3 KOs) defends her crown for the first time against the USA’s Jamie Mitchell (6-0-2, 4 KOs), Northampton’s Kieron Conway (16-2-1, 3 KOs) looks to bounce back from his loss to Souleymane Cissokho on the Canelo vs. Saunders undercard when he meets James Metcalf (21-1, 13 KOs), Tony Bellew-managed Lightweight Luke Willis (10-0, 1 KO) clashes with Norwich’s Rylan Charlton (6-1-1, 3 KOs), two-time World Title challenger Natasha Jonas (9-2-1, 7 KOs) returns after her thrilling fight with Katie Taylor in May, Birmingham Heavyweight hope Solomon Dacres (2-0, 1 KO) steps up against the experienced Kamil Sokolowski (10-22-2, 4 KOs) in just his third fight, Wigan Lightweight Rhiannon Dixon (3-0) fights for the second time this year and Blane Hyland (4-1) meets Santiago San Eusebio (3-1-2, 2 KOs) in a four round Super-Flyweight contest.

PAUL SMITH JOINS PROBELLUM AS NEW ON-AIR TALENT

Major global boxing and media company Probellum is proud to announce that former multiple-time world title challenger Paul Smith will join the team as part of its new on-air talent.

During his own boxing career, Smith had fantastic success, winning the British super-middleweight title on numerous occasions and challenging for world honours three times. He also shared the ring with some of the sport’s biggest stars, such as Andre Ward, Arthur Abraham, George Groves and James DeGale.

The Liverpudlian is part of the proud fighting Smith family alongside Callum, Liam and Stephen, who made history by having all four brothers win British titles during their respective careers, while Callum and Liam also became world champions.

Since hanging up the gloves, Paul has gone on to become an extremely successful broadcaster within boxing, working for major networks such as Sky Sports, DAZN and BoxNation to name a few, providing expert analysis in the process.

Smith is just one of several big names that will be part of Probellum’s on-air talent line up, with even more stellar additions set to be unveiled to in the near future.

Probellum is looking to build an ubiquitous, digital platform to compliment broadcasters and promoters –  whilst also empowering fighters and galvanizing a global fanbase in order to promote the biggest fights to boxing fans around the world.

“I really can’t wait to get involved in a company that I can see doing really big things in boxing,” said Smith. “Boxing is my life, and has been my livelihood, hobby, sport and job since I was nine years of age.

“To continue to work in it and call big fights and be involved in the media side of things is a passion of mine, and I feel lucky and privileged to be doing it.”

“It’s fantastic to announce that Paul Smith will be part of our on-air talent line-up here at Probellum,” said Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum. “He’s shown over the last few years that he has one of the best minds in boxing when it comes to breaking down and analysing fights.

Paul has been there, seen it and done it as a professional boxer, achieving immense success during his own career, and so it means nothing will faze him and he’ll be more than happy to speak his mind, and that’s exactly what we want.

“This is just the start of what will be a star-studded talent line-up for Probellum, so we can’t wait to show boxing fans around the world who else will be part of our team.”

Stay tuned for more exciting announcements from Probellum over the coming days.

I’VE WANTED THIS FIGHT FOR A LONG TIME SAYS BOLOTNIKS

‘The Lion’ ready to hand Buatsi first loss
Ricards Bolotniks is ready to strike gold again as he steps into the lion’s den and takes on Joshua Buatsi in a massive fight for the Light-Heavyweight division at Matchroom Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex this Saturday August 14.

Bolotniks (18-5-1, 8 KOs) has done things the hard way after a less than spectacular start to his career, losing three and drawing one of his first eight fights after turning pro in August 2013.

The Latvian was not deterred by those setbacks and two further defeats and burst into the reckoning for major titles in a big way by winning the MTK Golden Contract tournament at the end of 2020.

The 31-year-old was considered an outsider for the tournament but destroyed the unbeaten Steven Ward inside the opening round of their quarter-final in December 2019 at York Hall, before widely outpointing Hosea Burton in the semi-final in his Riga backyard in September.

That set up a final with Germany’s Serge Michel that ‘The Lion’ dominated and put an exclamation mark on his win with a stoppage at the death, winning the coveted contract and firmly cementing his place as a real threat at 175lbs.

Buatsi has roared to 14-0 as a pro and only two fighters have heard the final bell against the 2016 Olympic bronze medal man, but Bolotniks is full of confidence that he’ll hand a first pro defeat to the Londoner and continue his remarkable journey to World Title honours.

“I’ve wanted this fight for a long time, and I’ve always thought that we would fight so all my training over the last six months has been for this man,” said Bolotniks. “It’s going to be a hard fight and a long fight but I’ve done the 12 rounds before and he hasn’t yet, I think that I can beat him over the full distance but I want it to be a street fight, a boxing match, I want to show everything that I have got so that I can go back to the dressing room afterwards and say ‘yes, we did it’, I want that feeling.

“I’ve had three fights cancelled in 2021, but then boom, here comes the Buatsi fight. So, I am happy now, it’s a massive fight for me and I hope that after I win this fight there will be more this year, but the focus is only on this one.

“Every fighter gets better the more fights that they have, he’s improved but so have I. I only fight for my family, for my country and my coach – and money! But I am not the kind of guy to say that I don’t fight for money, just belts – I need to buy food and to pay for the house, petrol for the car, clothes for me wife – so of course the money is important. But my family believe in me so much and that drives me on so much.

“I only think about Joshua, so I don’t want to think about the future. I am well ranked in the governing bodies so of course I look at the champions and the belts, and my wife likes the WBC belt, she wants me to win that! But we need to do our job on Saturday night and then the future will sort itself out.

“Latvian’s are made for boxing because we are big strong people and we’re proud, so we put it all on the line when we get chances to prove ourselves. I wanted to box because I watched Mairis Briedis on TV and now I am training alongside him, it’s amazing.”

Buatsi vs. Bolotniks tops a huge night of action, Joe Cordina (12-0, 7 KOs) returns in a ten round Lightweight clash with Joshuah Hernandez (10-3, 8 KOs), Portsmouth’s Michael McKinson (20-0, 2 KOs) defends his WBO Welterweight Title against Przemyslaw Runowski (19-1, 5 KOs), Hopey Price (4-0, 1 KO) meets Claudio Grande (5-0, 3 KOs) in a six round Super-Bantamweight contest, Glasgow’s Kash Farooq (15-1, 6 KOs) clashes with Luis Gerardo Castillo (28-2, 18 KOs) for the WBC International Bantamweight Title, the USA’s Raymond Ford (8-0-1, 4 KOs) meets Watford’s Reece Bellotti (14-4, 12 KOs) for the vacant WBA Continental Featherweight Title and Manchester Super-Featherweight Zelfa Barrett (25-1, 15 KOs) joins the card as a late addition.

GEORGE FOX READY TO STEP UP AFTER TYSON FURY CAMPS

GEORGE FOX believes an “life-changing” education from Tyson Fury will put him top of the class in Britain next year.

The WBC World Heavyweight champion was impressed by Queensberry’s latest big hope when they spent two camps together.

Fox (3-0), who is trained by his Father, Don Charles has his first fight for Frank Warren at SSE Arena, Wembley on Saturday July 24, live on BT Sport.

The Mill Hill Heavyweight hope has mixed with plenty of world class fighters besides Fury. He has also sparred Dereck Chisora, Daniel Dubois, Anthony Joshua, Joe Joyce and Dillian Whyte.

Because of the pandemic, 6ft 7in Fox hasn’t boxed since November 2019, but says: “It’s actually been the most useful time I have had to knuckle down. I have never trained so hard this consistently.

“I have had top sparring and did two camps with Tyson Fury – one in Las Vegas and one in Morecambe.

“It was life-changing with Tyson. I became very close with him, very friendly with him.

“Because of my style, I am not a traditional banger. I am more of a technical Heavyweight trying to pick people apart.

“Having said that the last year or so we have done strength work and put on power, no doubt.

“Tyson has been instrumental in teaching me certain fundamentals that suit me because I am 6ft 7in and a bit — tall and rangy.

“He has just helped me push on with my craft and given me some inside secrets.

“All of the guys  I sparred have helped in their own way. When you’re sparring with guys at that level there are always tricks to be taken, lessons to be learned.

“We have used the time away to develop, to build, to grow and I’m looking forward to all that hard work coming to fruition on fight night.”

Fox, 29, believes his gym experiences can be a fast pass to the British title next year, and he has big targets.

He added: “This time next year it is realistic to hope I will be 10-0 and in British title contention.

“We are going to move as quickly as possible. I feel I have the experience without having too many fights.

“I have been in boxing a long time. I am always watching boxing, always observing and had top level sparring . It’s now about making sure I’m active.

“It all depends how things progress, but you have a handful of guys like Fabio Wardley, Nick Webb, Nathan Gorman, my good friend David Adeleye and Dave Allen is back.

“Things can change, but they are all relevant in the division and others will emerge. Whoever it is, we just have to make sure I am prepared when the chance comes.

“I’ve known Frank and Francis Warren since I was a young kid so this is close to home. There is a long standing relationship, a lot of trust and belief where we’re heading together.

“I am looking forward to the partnership and what we can manifest in the next few years together.”
